So pick the one you think the soil behaves most as. Or select it based on how you want the soil dealt with. If you're concerned with plasticity under a foundation, call it a lean or fat clay and move on.

Jan 31, 2023 · Throwing clay typically contain more fine plastic clay, e.g. ball clay, which is susceptible to higher shrinking, aka. fat clays. This is not what you want for hand building. You want a leaner clay, you can achieve this by adding sand or grog to a fat clay. The sand and/or grog will not shrink when drying and thus make for less total shrinkage.
